  • Once an ancient fishing village with a population of 175, San Jose has recently become a tourist attraction. Situated in a Natural Park, it overlooks a wide sheltered, sandy bay – the village itself has sandy streets – and is within walking distance of other peaceful beaches and coves.

It now boasts two harbours; its old fishing port and a new yachting marina and area for water sports. At the information centre, you can find out about walking, horse-trekking and mountain biking in the Natural Park.

A variety of accommodation, ranging from camping, a youth hostel and a Refugio to conventional hotels is available and there are also plenty of places to eat, serving fast food and pizzas as well as good, local fish. From 23 August to 1 September, there is a fair in honour of Our Lady of the Sea, which includes a Flamenco Festival.

A regular bus service runs from Almeria to San Jose.
