Retamar is a residential zone situated just to the east of Almeria, where the beach begins its long 15 km sweep towards the Natural Park of Cabo de Gata. In Retamar, there are more than 20 urbanizations, all equipped with communal pools, sports trails and green areas. The complex is divided by a road into northern and southern zones. The southern zone, which is closest to the beach, is mostly made up of duplexes and apartments, whilst the northern zone consists mainly of individual chalets with gardens and often their own swimming pools where many people reside all the year round.
Only 15 km. from Almeria city, Retamar is easily reached via the coastal road from the city and the Motorway and N-344 from all directions. The airport is just 7 km away and there is a bus service there and into the city.
Retamar is understandably busy in the summer, especially when Almeria overflows during the Fiestas and the Pilgramage of Torregarcia is celebrated, but when the high summer season is over, Retamar returns to its normal tranquillity. Then, the fact that it is close to the beautiful the Cabo de Gata Natural Park and also the facilities of the bustling city makes it a very attractive proposition for people wanting to enjoy both worlds.
Currently, Retamar is one of the main summer vacation destinations of Almeria where it entertains more than ten thousand people in the summer. Besides, one of the main festivals of Almeria, the Romeria of Torregarcia, obtains thousands of people who come to the event in Retamar every year.
The Mediterranean Games of 2005, that took part in Almeria, had a huge impact on the area and Retamar was hugely benifited by the Toyo Residential area which was purpose built as a Village for the athletes that took part in the games.
Besides the Village, hundreds of new dwellings have been constructed in the area with a multitude of green zones, various hotels, a stadium and even a sports port for enjoyment of all.
